In continental knitting, you hold the yarn in your left (or non-dominant) hand and "pick" it as you form stitches. It uses smaller, more efficient movements than many other knitting methods, allowing makers to knit with reduced risk of repetitive strain. It’s also speedy with many knitters finding it to be a faster knitting style.

Because the yarn is held in your non-dominant hand (left for most people), it is also more comfortable for many crocheters. If you are a crocheter who struggled to master knitting, this might be the class for you as Crochet and Continental Knitting both use the same yarn orientation.

If you are a thrower, it’s a useful skill for making stranded colourwork projects.

In this class you will learn how to tension your yarn in your non-dominant hand, while knitting with your dominant hand. We will cover the knit stitch, purl stitch, and yarn over (YO).

HOMEWORK: Using the yarn and needles of your choice, please cast on 20 stitches and knit four or five rows (approx 1 inch) before the first class.

Dates: Wednesday, February 18 and 25 from 7 - 9 PM (two nights)

Instructor: Monika S.

Prerequisite skills: You must already know knit, purl and yarn over.

Materials: Please bring or plan to purchase needles and yarn that you are comfortable using. We find worsted weight yarn and 4.5 or 5mm helpful for learning, as the stitches are large enough to see clearly and the work goes faster than finer yarn.
