Created to honour the native Machega sheep from which the wool is derived, Machelopis is essentially unspun roving. Sourced and milled in Spain's Castilla-La Mancha.
It is fluffy and soft.
It is fragile and needs to be handled delicately. But don't let its delicate nature put you off. Carefully unwind your wool from the plate (never tug) as you knit your stitches. If the wool breaks, simply overlap the two ends and twist (spit-splice) them back together and carry on.
Once knit, the resulting fabric is exceptionally light and airy. And surprisingly strong!
Manchelopis is wound into plates as a 2 ply, creating a DK weight (or heavier) yarn. With some skill, it can be separated into a single strand creating the equivalent to a fingering weight.
We are planning to make The Petite Knitter's Caribou Crossing in this yarn.
